The Autobiography of Jane Jones
Jane Jones was beautiful skillful young woman. Jane sold to John Jackson at twenty years old. He paid $345 for her because she was beautiful skillful young woman. She was also lighter then the other slaves, so that is why she cost more than other slaves. When she first got to the plantation, she saw a lot of slaves working on a rice field. She did not know why they were doing it, but she had her guesses. She couldn't believe what she saw next. She saw the worse thing ever a guy getting flogged. After that, she saw the guy flogging him put salt on the slave's back. After that she heard a loud scream from the poor young man.
He told her to work as a household slave. She didn't know what a household slave did at first, but she figured it out from another slave. The other slave's name was Mary. She was a beautiful young girl, who never complained. Mary taught her how to take care of the kids. Jane had so much respect for her. It was mostly because she never
complained about the work. They were on call for 24 hours. There was not enough workers in the field, so the Master told Mary too. After that, they did not talk anymore. She felt so helpless after Mary left.
She went through years wondering what she do to deserve this. She just did her job and took care of the kids. She never cried because she did not want people to think that she was weak. The kids were lovely to Jane. The oldest was a 17 year old girl who was thoughtful as can be. Her name was Sarah and treated Jane just like her
mother. Jane was 8 years older than her. Sarah taught her how to read and respected her even though she was a slave. Sarah was a perfect girl and cared about Jane.
There was a war going on between the North and the South at the time. When it ended, her master was wordless. He finally just told the slaves they were free. He also told the slaves that they could stay if they
would like. Jane and Sarah agreed to leave together. They left at the crack of dawn, but they had no clue where they were going. The only money they had left was what Sarah gave them. They had only four nickels for there whole trip. They walked for days and days. They finally got to a boat. They had to pay a nickel each to ride the boat. They decided to go to Indiana. They hoped to get their life together. They stayed together for a while until Mary meet a guy named James. Mary, then without hesitation left Jane by herself. Mary and John decided to go to Ohio a state by Indiana.
Jane was finally all alone in Indiana and had no clue what to do. She decided to get her life back on track without Mary. She thought hard about what to do with her life. At the end of all her thoughts, she decided to be a cook. She was always a stupendous cook and had no trouble with cooking anything. She got her first job as a cook and never could be happier. Then, on her way there she saw a tall handsome man working on the railroads. She went to talk to him, but she was as nervous as can be. She found out his name was Jimmy and he lived in Indiana for all his life. She spent so much time with Jimmy. They decided to get married. It was not soon after that she found out she was pregnant. She had a beautiful, sweet baby girl and she named it Sarah Mary Jones. She named it after the two people that meant the most to her. Even though Mary left her she had a deep impression on Jane. Sarah, the girl who taught her to read and write left a deeper impression. Jane died at the age of seventy. Now the only memory of Jane after she died was a cook book. She wrote down all the recipes she learned in the cook book. This book was past down with a story to tell with everyone that touched it.
